The Best Bible Verses About Finances

As Christians, money can often be considered a controversial subject. With all the mixed feelings regarding the topic, it’s important to familiarize ourselves with the specific Bible scriptures on finances.

This way, we could fully understand God’s stance, instead of being led blindly or without grasping the entire picture! We could then confidently seek God to bless our finances, with the right spiritual and emotional approach. Backed by His word! As we should be doing!

Fear, anxiety and worrying over our financial situation is quite common. 47% of adults in the United States admit to being stressed by money. Even though these emotions are widespread, that doesn’t necessarily make them acceptable! Not with God as our provider!

So… Is it okay to be worried about money? Is wanting more money acceptable? Should I like having money? Is not wanting to be poor, or to be living paycheck to paycheck, appropriate for believers?

There are many faith versus finance related questions floating around! The answer(s) is quite simple…

At the most basic level, we need money to survive. That’s according to worldly standards. But we do not live according to worldly standards! As servants of the True and Living God, we do not need money to survive! We need God! Period! And God takes care of all our needs, including the financial ones.

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)

Even though having money affords us certain opportunities, and we are able to use it to purchase items that we need, it is no different from any other tool at our disposal. We respect money for the service that it provides, but it cannot be the center of our attention. God needs to be the center!

So we seek God, we love God, we honor God. We focus our attention on God. And God takes care of the rest. Once we adopt this approach, in our hearts, God would bless us financially.

It’s funny how it works. And very simple actually! As long as you don’t need money to be happy, you will be rewarded financially. You fulfill your duties towards God and He’d take care of your finances. How amazing is our God!

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.” (Matthew 22:37)

Let’s review God’s Word and discuss some powerful Bible verses concerning money. This way, you can adopt the right mental and spiritual approach to unlock your financial breakthrough.

Powerful Bible Scriptures on Finances

1. Genesis 28:20-22

“Then Jacob made this vow: ‘If God will indeed be with me and protect me on this journey, and if He will provide me with food and clothing, and if I return safely to my father’s home, then the Lord will certainly be my God.

And this memorial pillar I have set up will become a place for worshipping God, and I will present to God a tenth of everything He gives me.’”

This scriptures shows:

i. Jacob’s faithfulness to God as he made a pledge to Him in faith. This was probably Jacob’s primary intention. However…

ii. Jacob’s ignorance and naivety is also very evident here. We do not bargain with God! We serve Him in faith, without terms and conditions. God is not our servant or employee and we cannot treat Him like one.

As inexperienced, new believers, we are often guilty of this. This is oftentimes why our miracles and breakthroughs are delayed. Just as it was for Jacob! He had a lot of spiritual growth and humbling to undergo before he experienced financial success.

Spiritual education is vital! We must know what God expects from us and practice obedience. Our hearts must be aligned with God’s expectations or else our ignorance would hinder our blessings.

Remember God’s viewpoint is always the same and He doesn’t change. Once we do our duties, God would take care of the rest!

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

Jacob worked for 14 years before getting his heart’s desire. God was always with him, but he had a lot of maturing to do, before receiving his breakthrough.

2. Genesis 30:27-43

“I have become wealthy, for the Lord has blessed me because of you.”

“Thus the man increased greatly…”

If we continue to examine the scriptures on finances, specific to Jacob, we learn:

i. God will use you to bless the finances of others.

ii. Your blessing will come at the right time.

iii. God is preparing you for your financial breakthrough.

iv. Serve God, be patient, grow in faith, be obedient and your blessings will follow.

v. God wants us to prosper financially, we just need to be ready.

vi. God takes care of His people.

vii. God works miracles to bless our finances.

viii. Even the greatest servants of God made mistakes. We need to learn from their errors so we do not repeat them and delay our rewards.

iii. God uses our financial situation to test our obedience.

Lessons:

i. Our financial blessings come from God and all praises need to be dedicated to Him. Self praise is sinful!

ii. God blesses us with the ability to earn money. It isn’t always just handed to us.

5. Deuteronomy 15:10

“You shall give to Him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to Him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.”

We must be charitable, invest in growing God’s kingdom and give willingly.

6. Nehemiah 10:35

“We obligate ourselves to bring the first fruits of our ground and the first fruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the Lord.”

We should faithfully pledge our best to God, not just what is leftover.

God always takes care of us and gives us more than we need.

8. Psalm 24:4-6

“He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Such is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.”

Seek God, follow His commandments and we will be blessed.

9. Psalm 49:16-17

“So don’t be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid. For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave.”

Don’t be distracted by the riches of others.

10. Psalm 78:24

“He rained down manna for them to eat, He gave them bread from heaven. They ate the food of angels! God gave them all they could hold.”

God will always take care of us, even if it means working a miracle in our favor.

“Lazy people are soon poor, hard workers get rich. A wise youth harvests in the summer, but one who sleeps during harvest is a disgrace.

We must work hard to achieve our financial goals.

“The earnings of the godly enhance their lives, but evil people squander their money on sin.

Our financial blessings from God must serve as a testimony of God’s generosity towards us, to complement our lives as Christians and to further the Kingdom of God.

“The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.”

The presence of God in our lives is our real wealth. When God blessed us financially, there is no catch associated.

15. Proverbs 11:1-31

The Lord detests the use of dishonest scales, but he delights in accurate weights.

We must be honest in our business endeavours.

Riches won’t help on the day of judgement, but right living can save you from death.

Spiritual wealth trumps material wealth. Our salvation depends on it.

Evil people get rich for the moment, but the reward of the godly will last.

As believers, our heavenly treasures are for eternity.

Give freely and become more wealthy, be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper, those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

When we give, we will be blessed in return. Both financially and spiritually.

“Trust in your money and down you go! But the godly flourish like leaves in spring.

We trust in God, not money!

“Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is honored.”

Stubbornness and laziness destroys wealth.

“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.”

Godly people create generational wealth. The ungodly will never truly be wealthy.

“The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food, but it is swept away through injustice.”

We must be aware of social injustice and fight against it.

“The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want.”

God will always provide for His people. Unbelievers will forever be dissatisfied.

18. Proverbs 15:27

“Whoever is greedy for unjust gain troubles his own household, but he who hates bribes will live.”

Our business pursuits must be ethical.

20. Proverbs 21:5-20

Be charitable.

Anyone that gets ahead financially, by doing evil, will end in destruction.

“Don’t rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court. For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.”

God will punish those who take advantage of others.

“Don’t agree to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for someone else. If you can’t pay it, even your bed will be snatched from under you.”

22. Proverbs 23:4

“Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.”

Seeking financial betterment is perfectly fine, but it shouldn’t be your only priority.

23. Ecclesiastes 5:8-20

“Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!”

Money cannot buy happiness.

“We all come to the end of our lives as naked and empty-handed as on the day we were born. We can’t take our riches with us.”

We came into this life with nothing and we will leave the same way.

“And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it, to enjoy your work and accept your lot in life. This is indeed a gift from God.”

Good health, money and a good life are blessings from God. As believers, we deserve to enjoy it.

24. Ecclesiastes 6:9

“Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless, like chasing the wind.”

Be ambitious, but be contented.

25. Ecclesiastes 11:1-2

“Send your grain across the seas, and in time, profits will flow back to you. But divide your investments among many places, for you do not know what risks might lie ahead.”

Invest wisely, consider risks and diversify.

26. Joel 2:25

“The Lord says, ‘I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts. It was I who sent this great destroying army against you.

Once again you will have all the food you want, and you will praise the Lord your God, who does these miracles for you.”

God is in control. He gives and takes away based on His plan for our lives. He also has the power to return lost finances.

27. Malachi 3:10

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do, I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!”

Invest in growing God’s Kingdom and you will be rewarded.

28. Matthew 6:2-34

“Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”

Be discreet when doing charity. You should not be in it for fame.

“forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

We need to treat others, the same way we expect to be treated.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Your priority should be your rewards in heaven, not gathering assets on earth.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light”

Be mindful of the things you expose yourself to, as they would influence your desires.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

Respect money for the service it provides. But your love should be towards God, not money.

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life… But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Put your faith in God and He will take care of you.

29. Matthew 7:7-11

“Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”

We need to pray and ask God to bless our finances. He will.

30. Luke 6:38

“Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

We would be assessed by our generosity towards others.

31. Luke 11:42

“What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore justice and the love of God. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.”

Godly financial practices must be paired with love and obedience to the other teachings of Christ.

32. Luke 12:28-34

Have faith, God will provide for you.

“Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe, no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”

Heaven and the reward of eternal life must be your number one goal.

33. Luke 14:28

“For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?”

God expects us to manage our finances with intelligence. Financial planning, project management and budgeting are biblical principles.

34. Luke 16:11

“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.”

Learn to manage a little and God would reward you with more.

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”

Your heart needs to desire God, knowing that He would take care of everything else.

35. Acts 20:35

“And I have been a constant example of how you can help those in need by working hard. You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Work hard and give to those in need.

36. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

A farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure.

For God loves a person who gives cheerfully. And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.”

Bless others from your finances and God will bless you.

37. Philippians 4:19

“God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.”

God will always take care of us financially and otherwise.

38. 1 Timothy 5:8

“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

God expects us to take care of our family, financially.

39. 1 Timothy 6:6-10

“But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.”

God wants us to be contented with what we have.

“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.”

We need to be mindful of the dangers that come with obsessing over money.

40. Hebrews 13:5

“Don’t love money, be satisfied with what you have.”

Have a healthy respect for money and be grateful for what God has provided for you.

God warns against those who acquired money unethically.

Selflessly take care of others.

Matthew 19: Bonus Case Study Scripture on Finances

Jesus Christ specifically discussed wealth in Matthew 19, as follows:

“If you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.”

“If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

“And Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.’

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, ‘Who then can be saved?’ But Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”

Key takeaways:

i. The basic criteria to enter into heaven is obeying God’s commandments.

ii. It is difficult for a rich person to enter into heaven, but not impossible. It all depends on where your heart is truly positioned, God or money? God will be the judge.

iii. You can be rich because God blesses His people. But you cannot be fixated on material wealth.

iv. Lean on God and have faith in Him only. Financial success should just be an added bonus, not a main area of emotional focus.
